Description:
This vintage Space Pilot Super-Sonic Ray gun dates from the late 1950's and is one of a series of 'Dan Dare' toys made by English toy manufacturer Merit.
The battery-operated gun 'fires' three different coloured beams of light and has a trigger operated Morse Code buzzer. The colours of the torch, and the option of sound, can be chosen by using controls on the body of the gun.
It should be pointed out that although this toy was widely known as a Dan Dare toy and features Dan Dare artwork on the box, and has the wording 'Inter Planet Space Fleet' on the gun, it does not actually mention Dan Dare on the box. This is believed to be for licensing reasons.
The gun we have for sale, pictured on this page is totally original and in superb 'near mint' condition, with its original box. The box features fantastic period artwork of Dan Dare and his colleagues exploring the surface of a distant planet.
The box inner features great detailed instructions and 'scientific' explanation of how the gun works. This was a feature of the vintage toys in this range and gives them a fantastic period feel.
This ray gun, like most vintage Dan Dare toys, is now very rare, and to find one in such excellent condition with the original box is very unusual. In addition to being a lovely nostalgic item, these toys are now becoming very collectable and are an excellent investment for the future.
Dimensions: Approx. 23cm (9") in length
Requires 2 x 'D' batteries
Condition:
Gun: Near Mint
Box: Good
The gun is in superb condition throughout. There is a small repair to the red bulb-holder where it has been over-tightened at some stage and has slightly cracked (approx. 2cm). However, the crack has very neatly glued and is virtually invisible (see picture).
The box is in good condition for its age. It does have some minor wear - a small 3cm tear to one end flap, a couple of pen marks to the lid and a small tear in the box inner (see picture). Apart from these items of wear it is in excellent condition with bright artwork.
